The Plum Line is not a product.
It is a new concept in forestry & natural resource consulting.
Introduction
The Plum Line is a new concept in forestry and natural resource consulting: a consulting partnership specializing in all aspects of sustainable forest management systems that truly meet the client's needs. The Plum Line’s principals have over 40 years combined experience and dedication to the forestry profession and its mission to conserve the nation’s forests for the benefit of all in cooperation with academia, government, industry, and private organizations.A Systems Approach to Forestry
A “systems” approach to forestry is key to The Plum Line’s concept of sustainable forest management systems (SFMSs). For The Plum Line, a sustainable forest management system is more than just an “EMS” (environmental management system) applied to forestry or an existing forest certification system overlayed on your organization. In our view, an organization’s SFMS should grow out of it’s own values, mission, and strategy. We are experienced and prepared to work with virtually any aspect of your organization’s processes: administration; auditing & audit preparation; inventory & information systems; economics, marketing & feasibility studies; resource planning & management; public policy; conflict resolution, organizational development & process facilitation; and strategic planning.
Rather than conform your organization to any external system, we work with you to develop a systematic integration of your organization’s needs with those of your clients, suppliers, and other stakeholders. If it meets your needs, we will also help you cross-reference your system to one or more external systems, evaluate your system according to that standard, or assist in preparation.
Systematic Benefits
The benefits of a systems approach to your organization’s needs include:• more focused activities,Working with System Standards
• quicker response times,
• closer integration with client, suppliers, and other stakeholder needs and systems,
• improved processes,
• more consistent regulatory compliance,
• reduced conflict, and
• lower costs.
The Plum Line has experience with all major North American sustainable forest management systems: CSA, FSC, ISO, and SFI. We are prepared to adapt or use good ideas from any system to meet your needs. We consider ISO 14001 to be the international standard for environmental management systems because of its credible sponsorship, wide recognition, common-sense planning approach, ease of use, and compatibility with the ISO 9000 series of quality management standards.
We consider CSA Z808/809 to be ISO-compatible system standards with highly developed detail applicable to forestry systems.
We consider SFISM 2000 to be an ISO-compatible system standard (with some performance components) which offers flexible application to a wide variety of organizations.
We consider FSC to be a specialized performance standard (with some management system components) aimed primarily at capturing retail advantage through chain-of-custody marketing.
